After you sign up for your Filter My Jobs account, its is necessary to provide us with the:

Search sites

Search terms/restrictions

…for us to create your customer searches. This post will explain exactly how this is done.

Begin by going to your favorite sites and type in your search information. Make the search as specific as you can, as this search will be repeatedly pulled into your personal Filter My Jobs page. Therefore, it makes sense to spend extra effort in getting this one search just right.

After you have entered a specific search, select go or return, and review the search results. Here is an example search we performed using the site Simply Hired.

We have two pages of results for this search, so this is a good search. As we look through it, we can improve it by adding negative search terms.

By just two adding keywords we are down to to one page of results. Now we have far fewer responses we are not interested in. We did this just by looking at the original search results and by taking keywords from results we were not interested in. We can’t emphasis enough, that getting only the search results that meet your requirements in this process. It takes up front effort, but it pays dividends in the future as this search will become automated.

After you have exactly the search results that you want, take note of the keywords used to get the search results that you wanted.

You will need to do this for every website that you would like included in your personal Filter My Jobs page. You may select up to 7 web sites if you have the standard plan, or up to 10 if you have the gold plan. Therefore, the email you would send us would look like this.

Search Results

Remember that we will not show all the results, just the best roughly ten results. If you want to see the full search results, select the link at the top of the header.

Selecting “Sap apo jobs – California | SimplyHired” and the full search results will open.

Keywords Development

You will need to do this for every website that you would like included in your personal Filter My Research page. You may select up to 7 web sites if you have the standard plan, or up to 10 if you have the gold plan. Therefore, the email you would send us would look like this.

______________________________

After a day or so, we will send you your password protected Filter My Jobs web page. Please review the page after we send it to you to make sure the searches provide the information you thought they would.

We think that job searching is a perfect application of feed technology. This is because job searching requires going the same thing over and over again (finding the site, entering the search terms, reviewing the output). We thought we would do a little research to see how common job search RSS feeds are in common usage. The reason we are interested in this is because this could be used to create a job dashboard for people looking for jobs.

We decided to goto Google Adwords and use their keyword tool. This is a good way to find how often search terms are entered. We decided to contrast it to the number of searches for “search engines.” See the results below.

Now notice how much more popular the terms related to search engines are.

What we take from this is that people are not searching for and using job RSS feeds with anywhere close to the level that they search for job search engines. We also see that few sites are advertising their job feeds. Look, we only find 4 ads under job feed search.

We will discuss this topic in more detail in future posts.
